Quantum Dots in nano- and bio-photonic systems

Increasing energy demands by both developing and developed countries, the drive for technological advancement and the concurrent ever-approaching limits of the semiconductor industry have all made the development of new functional materials one of the most crucial challenges of today. This demand has inspired scientists to expand their research beyond the standard materials and techniques and towards interdisciplinary directions.

Colloidal Quantum Dots (QDs) are bright and stable fluorophores, with almost fully decoupled optical and chemical properties. This makes them idea candidates for the implementation into hybrid mixed-material photonic systems. In this seminar, I will describe some of my research into the use of QDs as fluorescent probes for cancer therapies, artificial light-harvesting elements for bio-complexes and nano-sized sources for plasmonic devices.
