Gene-environment interaction through the prism of metabolomics

Metabolome provides a birds-eye view of reorganization of the biochemical landscape underlying outcome of gene-environment interactions. While the diversity of metabolome makes its analysis challenging, making biological sense of the signatures warrants consideration of the context as well as integration of gene and protein expression signatures. This talk will elaborate the nuances of the art as well as rewards of addressing these challenges with examples of studies ranging from analysis of cancer metabolism and host-microbiome interaction to effects of genetic and environmental stresses on biofluid metabolome, which may be exploited to identify biomarkers. It will also delve into the role of metabolic reprogramming in environmental stress response in plants. These studies underscore how metabolomics can play an important role in holistic understanding of the effect of dynamic exposome on our health amid existing and future environmental challenges including global warming.
